About the Artist

My Philosophy

Who knows why some of us are motivated to make something new – to make “art?” I think that for me it’s an urge to share my fascination with visual and emotional experience with other people. It’s also a love of playing with materials, experimenting with colors, textures, and processes to see what will happen. I enjoy exploring the border between Control and Accident to find something fresh.

I like to experiment with art materials, with processes and with subject matter, so my work seldom progresses in a straight line. It has zig-zagged from abstract to figurative images, from projected light installations to acrylic paintings to photo emulsion prints to monotypes.

The continuing search keeps me engaged on my creative path every day. I hope others will respond to my work with some of the excitement that I’ve had in making it.

Background

I am retired from a career as an architect specializing in buildings incorporating solar design and energy conservation. Soon after graduation from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Architecture degree, I joined the Peace Corps and spent two years in Iran while the Shah was still in power prior to their revolution. During my service I designed several parks and public buildings. The beautiful tile-covered mosques and vernacular architecture of Iran made a deep impression on me. My world travel after Peace Corps offered many more rich experiences that still influence my work.

I live in Encinitas, California (near San Diego), home to a lively creative community. I love working here among my fellow artists. We have a lot to be grateful for.
